Kate Malone

Kate found her way into teaching through art. While in film school at the Rhode Island School of Design she took a summer job teaching children how to make stop-motion animation. Ever since then she has enjoyed working creatively with children, tapping into their interests and motivations to drive their learning.

Kate earned her dual Master’s in Childhood General and Special Education from Bank Street College of Education in 2007, and her Masters of Education in Progressive Leadership, also from Bank Street, in 2023. She brings a holistic systems-thinking perspective to addressing children’s learning needs, always keeping children’s social-emotional development at the forefront as she guides them through challenges in language, reading, writing, mathematics, and executive functioning. Kate worked for many years as a Learning Specialist, Inclusion Specialist, and classroom teacher in a diverse array of educational settings. She served for four years as the Director of Education at a small school in Pasadena that served twice-exceptional students, creating an innovative program of inquiry-based, family participation-heavy learning that was both flexible and supportive, centering the needs of students with exceptional regulation and social skills development. Kate is delighted to be reunited with Jess, her old colleague from the Parkside School in New York City, to serve families at Down the Road Education.
